My husband, Lee, and I have a small ranch on the ocean in the Pacific Northwest. We purchased approximately ten acres in 2001. There was a 26' travel trailer, some out-buildings, sewer, water, and electricity on the property. The travel trailer was disposed and replaced with a garage/shop. We are currently in the process of building our home.

Our property is a long, rectangular shape. Part of the property is dunes that border the high tide line. The back part of the property is forest/jungle. Our house is being built back in the forest where it is more sheltered from high winds.

Being raised on a farm myself, I wanted to raise some chickens but I was worried about predators. We have racoons, coyotes, bobcat, cougar, and bear. I will write another day about our experiences with the chickens.

As I said, we are in the process of building our house, clearing and improving our property, raising chickens, and starting a vegetable garden. We are learning how to garden by the ocean, where most of the "soil" is sand and summers may consist of many overcast days. We invested in a green house to make the growing season last longer.

I will be writing about our projects and things we discover. Please join our blog and let us know what you have done to renew your lifestyle.
